| Long Hair and Lice! |
[18 Jul 2009|08:36am] |
This one's for those of you with young children (like me)! My local newspaper ran an item on a woman who picks lice for a living, and apparently this isn't specific to Florida... there are people who pick lice from hair across the country. They tend to eschew chemicals in favor of going through your hair strand by strand with a comb...! The one in the paper said she did a mother with waist-length hair that way. So if you get an infestation and you're not having any luck handling it (or like me, have no desire to chop off your hair!), you might try investigating "lice solution" places or lice-pickers, see if there are any in your area.
(The article had a couple of other interesting facts: lice can't cross blood-types and they don't like curly hair.)
Anyway, knew this was gross but it is part of long-hair (or any-hair) living, and I had no idea there were such things until today. I would have liked someone to tell me..! :)

| Where to get a fan? (UK site preferably) |
[18 Jul 2009|12:56pm] |
Hey everyone, thanks for all your help so far! Hopefully I shouldn't need to post again after this until it's time to debut my suit :3
So, where can I order small fans from? The smaller the better really, my muzzle probably can't take bigger than 5"... Though smaller would be brilliant, I'm at a loss as to what to get!
Advice on fans would be good, I think i've got it sussed as to where to put it and i can pop batteries in the cheeks.
Am I right in thinking that it will be more effective to have the fan blowing air out of the mouth?
Thank you so much guys, I'd be lost without you lot!

I pondered making this journal friends-only for awhile, but then decided that this wouldn't be particularly inclusive and frankly, filters are enough. Besides, I'm not going to defriend anyone if I don't have to; there are some doors that, if possible, you don't shut. Suffice to say that I'm keeping the predominance of my commentary on this whole matter as quiet as possible for the duration, but Shit Is Going Down. Not that shit hasn't been going down for months, but it finally went down far enough to hit the fan with an almighty splat.
There are a lot of things I need to do now. There are also things I want to do but can't, or at least shouldn't. I'm okay and everything, but ... well, that's a whole lot of whinge for a whole lot of elsewhere. Suffice to say that things require sorting in a serious way and in some cases, I'm not sure it's even possible.
Practically, what this means is that various projects are now on a delay of uncertain duration. Chaos Magic, for example. I haven't got the means to finish the last two chapters at the minute and I screwed up a data file burn so even if I had the means, I don't have the raw material. It'll get done; some stuff needs sorting first but it'll get done. I just don't know when yet.
I'm still reachable on mobile phone for those who have the number, and the usual email addresses and all that.

| The wisdom of recklessness |
[18 Jul 2009|12:43pm] |

Shared Wisdom? I have to admit the thought that I have a wisdom to share is quite daunting. As a mum, I've found that there are things I know that my children don't, such as 'if it keeps hurting, then stop doing it!' But that's about my operative level of wisdom. What else have I got? Hi, I'm new to the community - I found it through LHC. I'm new to LJ overall, really, since I only recently found a reason to use it.
I've been growing my hair since I can remember. I got occasional trims as a very small child (before I can recall) but my mother really just left it to its own devices. At last measure it was 48" and rather wavy. I have dyed it many times over the last 4 years, always pink and always the same brand. My hair seems quite tough, since I haven't noticed any damage from this (increased dryness, etc) and am hoping to get a professional dye job soon if costs allow. All my previous dyings have been done at home. My hair is no longer pink, as it has been a while since my last dye.
( Now, pictures! )

| Unasked by Astolat (NC-17) |
[18 Jul 2009|01:22pm] |
Fandom: Supernatural Pairing: Dean/Sam Length: 15.618 Author Website: Intimations Author on LJ: astolat Why this must be read:
Honestly, I would be surprised if there too many of you who still haven't read this fic but since this month's recs are all about the 'oldies and goldies', it's the perfect time for me to pay tribute to one of my favorite writers.
If I had to pick my top 5 fic writers, Astolat would definitely be one of them and this fic showcases the why incredibly well. There is everything here I could ever want in an SPN fic: great and well-rounded plot, self-sacrificing brothers, angst, (thought to be) unrequited love, defeating the enemy, happy ending, love, love, love. And let me tell you, no one describes the feeling of love better than Astolat. The way she blends an abstract concept with its physical manifestations, both in the writing and in the action, feels... ethereal, almost synesthetic.
I cry every time I read this fic because, honestly:
"He laughs until he's tasting blood, and this is what love is, he thinks; love is lying here with Dean's body cooling on the floor, iron wet and bitter on his own lips, and turning down everything he wants to keep something that's no use to him, only because Dean wanted him to; giving Dean this one last thing, the last piece of himself he could have called his own, body and heart and life already handed over. "I will. I'll do anything for him," Sam says. "I'll even keep my promise. And my answer to you is no." "
You have to read it to know the question, of course, but I promise it'll be worth it. And for those of you who haven't had a chance to read rageprufrock 's It Doesn't Mean You Can Explain the Ocean, don't worry. I disagree with Astolat because this fic stands beautifully on its own and reveals what Sam won't ask on its own time and at its own pace. You might have to read it more than once though.

Soooo lemme get this straight.
You attack people for telling you you can't play your character right, run off to make your own RP, steal everything from the first one, then continue to play your character like an OC with a canon character's skin?
God made you "special" alright.
Thank goodness snowflakes eventually melt because you're long overdo.

| And there is time to kill today by Booterang aka Nymeria (NC-17) |
[18 Jul 2009|12:40pm] |
Fandom: Supernatural Pairing: Dean/Sam Length: 4.990 Author on LJ: booterang Why this must be read:
This fic is another example from the early days of Supernatural but 3 years down the line, you can still read it as a future!fic. It works just as beautifully.
Basically, this is going to give you 5K words of blissful, incredible schmoop set on the day Dean is turning 50 and the boys are finally retiring. The fic describes an early morning and the tone of the writing is as serene as the time of day. That serenity lends itself beautifully to a feeling of history for the boys that we didn't get to see but that we can imagine; a history that bound them irrevocably together in love. And then there is early morning sex. You really can't be asking for more.
And then there is time to kill today
